He was also standard-bearer and a gentleman of the bed chamber to King Henry VIII. who, 22nd of June, anno 15 Henry VIII. appointed him an hereditary forester of Duffield frith; and in consequence of his having received a wound in his head in the loyal service, the king indulged him with the privilege of being covered in his presence.       Champion Park, one of the parks of Duffield Frith, lies approximately 2km west of Duffield. The name of the former parkland is retained in the nomenclature of Champion Farm in Windley parish. ‘Campana’ was the name of one of the three divisions of the Royal Forest of the Peak and was used by the Normans to describe pleasant open ground. Henry had built Duffield Castle to protect and administer the Frith, and he placed it in the charge of Enguenulf. [9] Meanwhile William inherited the family's Norman estates. He joined Robert Curthose and was captured at Tinchebrai.

We are fortunate that we walk straight out of our gates into Shining Cliff Woods also known as “Schymynde -Cliffe” in medieval times. It was one of the seven royal parks within the Duffield Frith, belonging to Edmund Crouchback, Earl of Lancaster.
